Atelihai!  It's been a busy month and I hope you are healthy and well.  I am teaching a 90-minute workshop at Mount Holyoke College this Wednesday. I'm thrilled to be asked back. I will post my handouts after we meet. Of course, my printer is not well. [A new one is on my Wish List to Santa.] My ValleyCreates Project Evolution Grant class is going well and there's a whole announcement there, too. Our hybrid public reading is scheduled for Jan. 18th from 6-8 p.m. ET. Woohoo!  I am prepping for Ottawa next week. More on that later.  Life is good being a teacher, artist, and poet. Feel free to check my Instagram page, @ella_alk, for more up-to-date info on my work.  My dear fren Shey recommends I start a newsletter. When I get a moment, I'll get there.  Feel free to leave a comment and share this with a fren or two.  Here's an image I made today. Specs are: Monday, digital, 4 by 6 inches, 2022. Nakummesuak,

I'm a happy Inuk!  I am showing my acrylic paintings at two different venues this weekend!  We'll be at the Wistariahurst Museum of Holyoke, MA from 10 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022.  There are five digital prints and 4 of five acrylic paintings for sale. Woohoo! Join us.  I also am one of the AWE studio residents that is showing at the MAP Gallery in Eastworks of Easthampton, MA. It has been such an honour to be one.  Living in Massachusetts, there are many awesome, fun, family-friendly Indigenous events for this weekend. I'm hoping they all go off sans covid, omicron, flu germs. I'm assuming (yes, I know the inside yolk: ass-u-me) that everyone has their vaccines updated.  Oct. 8th in Newburyport there will be an Indigenous People's Day (IPD) Celebration. Look here-  https://bit.ly/3BWRD00 Same day, in Boston at noon, there will be an IPD parade, meet at Park St. Station. Look at UAINE on FB for more info.   A Cherokee/African American older of mine is speaking at The Jones Library on Oct. 8th too!   Oct. 9th in Pittsfield, there will be an IPD Celebration. Look here-  https://bit.ly/3UUKshA. Oct. 10th in Newton, there will be an IPD Celebration. Look here-  https://bit.ly/3UXMDRK I know The Clark Art Institute sent info out about an IPD event. Curry College is doing something on Oct.10th. I've seen others. If you find more, let me know.  Twenty-five towns and cities in Mass. have

First, I want to give a BIG thank you to all the readers on this work-in-progress website. I am going to invest in some help to make this butter, better, best. Please be patient with me.  I had a great time at the first annual NAICOB Veterans powwow. I made some new connections and enjoyed the sunlight, the drums, and the customers. I enjoyed showing the different digital prints I made to honour Veterans and their families. It was even better to visit with my sugusik, Reggi.  I'll post the 5" by 7" cards after I make this deadline.  Orange Shirt Day aka 2d Annual Nat'l Truth and Reconciliation Day is tomorrow, Sept. 30th. Please wear an orange t-shirt. If you buy one that says, "Every Child Matters," I hope you bought it from another fabulous Indigenous person.  For my online class, I'm teaching, I shared this information on  Orange Shirt Theme:  https://nationaltoday.com/orange-shirt-day/ I know these events  and many more  will be held  on Sept. 30 th

Wonderful news

Despite the fact I'm on my last litre of President's Choice Watermelon Sparkling Water, it's been a busy wonderful week.  My online class "PoetryPainting2022" is awesome! All six students showed up last Wednesday and we did some fantastic writing poems and painting on Labor Day/Labour Day/Suliak/work. I posted on our Instagram page, @paintingpoetry2022, two digital images the day before class. On our Facebook page, PaintingPoetry2022, there is the class photo. I'll post more as we go about.  Big thank you to the Community Foundation of Western Mass. for the opportunity. The feedback from my students is touching and full of gratitude.   We had the closing of the Art of the Contemporary Indigenous Experience at the Plymouth Center for the Arts last Sunday, a somber day. I didn't sell any but the four images were seen and appreciated by the viewers. People thanked me for joining the show. I will have another opportunity to show in a different gallery later th

It's a great day to be Indigenous!  My art is showing in both my countries at the same time of this writing. I am a grateful Inuk!  I uploaded both videos on my YouTube channel. You can see them at https://bit.ly/3cQkyue and at https://bit.ly/3AOMVB4.  And to make life better, there are two press pieces about the Plymouth Center for the Arts show.  Robert Knox of  The Boston Globe  wrote an article about our show on Aug. 17th.  You can read it here  and Mr. Jay Sugarman interviewed Casey Figueroa, MFA on NewTV.org . You can watch the 29.30 min. show here .  The PCA show ends this Sunday, the 11th of September. There is a talk scheduled for 1 to 2 p.m. at 11 North St., Plymouth with four Indigenous artists on the panel. I'm not planning to speak but will if asked. I think will be a fun time on a challenging day.  A big thank you to the PCA, to Casey our curator, to my family for the moral support, to Gude for the  grace to create the acrylic paintings and digital print.    I wil

Video of PCA Contemporary Art Show

Atsusi!  The Contemporary Indigenous art show at the Plymouth Center for the Arts is live. My sweet husband introduced me, interviewed me, and recorded the video. Here is the video   After viewing it, please reshare this video and/or go see it in-person. It's in a great gallery space. I know most of the artists and they are amazing humans! I'm very proud to participate with them. A big nakummesuak to the curator Casey Figeuroa, MFA too.  Three of four of my pieces are for sale.  I can answer any questions you may have. I look forward to your feedback too.

It's almost time!

Ullaakut!  I am grateful you've been checking out my lil site. I apologize that I haven't posted lately.  I am preparing for the Plymouth Center for the Arts show that opens on Aug. 17th! So exciting that people will view my Inuit art. Here's the flyer!  Three of four of the frames were done by Hadley Picture Framing . What a great shop! Go there for all your framing needs.  I have other great news but need more time to write a cogent post. I'm thrilled nonetheless.  Feel free to follow me on Instagram at @ella_alk . I post there more.  Have a great Saturday and drink your water/imak and it's still cool to  wear your mask/n iukKagekkusijalluit.

These are exciting days!

Atsusi!  Nakummek to all who are reading my posts. I appreciate it very much.  My latest news is my class, Poetry Painting 2022, starts tomorrow! Five of six students have their art supplies via UPS or hand-delivered. The last one should be at the student's home on Wednesday.  Big thank you to the Community Foundation of Western Mass. for the funding to be able to teach six awesome students.  We do have FB, Twitter, and Instagram pages. We'll post during classes.  Other news,  my "Waves" painting/digital art will come down this Friday, 7/29/22. There's still time to go see it at the Greenfield Savings Bank in S. Deerfield, MA. There are only six of them out there swimming in this big world. If you go, let me know what you think.  I am ready to bring my three paintings to the frame shop tomorrow for the all-Indigenous art show at the Plymouth Center for the Arts in August! I'm soo excited!  There's a Nipmuc Nation powwow on Sunday! Click here  for the post

Apologies

Atelihai, Hi, Bonjour!  My apologies for not posting lately.  My  poem  did publish in June! The accompanying art is not mine while I do like it. It's a short, sweet, honest poem. Woohoo! Feedback welcome.  I am preparing for my class that starts in two weeks. My class is one of a kind! I am grateful I have earned a ValleyCreates Project Evolution Gran t! (It's under my legal name since it involves money. I prefer my given name all day, every day for years now.)  I have taught for years and an online class seemed the most natural choice during this 2+ year pandemic times. I believe this class is extra-special. It's a BIPOC-only poet and artists class. We'll write poetry and paint with acrylics within a three-hour class each week for a bit. I'm thrilled to do this! We have themes and are ready. We have social media pages on the ready. They are:          FB: @paintingpoetry2022         Instagram: @paintingpoetry2022         Twitter: @paintpoetry2022.  Feel free to li

Cultural Chaos 2022

Image
June is here!  Happy Pride!  Happy Indigenous History Month!  This happened:   I had the great opportunity to set up a table at Cultural Chaos 2022 of Easthampton, MA. Big thanks to my sweet husband who helped!  My digital prints and four acrylic paintings are for sale. This is my table with my Nunatsiavut kavamanga/Government flag. It was so exciting to participate in this long-awaited festival. One customer told me he moved with his family to Easthampton in 2019. They looked forward to attending Cultural Chaos in 2020, however, the pandemic happened and everything closed.  I think many were excited to attend. There were waves of people. The variety and beauty of folx washed over me and at one point, I realized how much I missed "the old days" pre-pandemic.  If I could have taken photos of people who passed by or of the customers I would have. The heat surprised me and I forgot.   I did see a man with a saw in his white cap. Another man with an Iguana on his shoulder. A coup

Hello! My apologies for not posting lately. The tree buds and flowers are lovely!  [Achoo!]  I taught one class at Mt. Holyoke College . This was the flyer.    I made the teal seed bead blue glass necklace and the moccs are from The Brown Bear of Canada.  28 April 2022 by me We met in the Betty Shabbazz Cultural Center on campus. Look how beautiful the wall is!  The class was small but we had deep discussions and read great poems.          28 April 2022 Photo by Rachel Beth Sayet In mid-April, my two online classes began for NAICOB students. We're reading and writing poetry one day a week.  The second class is we're reading the 2022 Canada Reads winner, Five Little Indians by Michelle Good .  The book is so well-written and powerful.  On the windy Thursday, I sold fifteen digital prints at the Native Crossroads Festival at Hampshire College. It was a great day! I sent out an email too to the interested folks who signed up! Thank you!            copied off their website .  I

Another Art Show

Happy April! We're still in pandemic times with world problems and worries.  Luckily, we, artists, are still creating, still speaking, and still writing for a better future. At least I am.   I'm a newish member of Quabbin Art Association of Belchertown, MA and I joined in their current art show.  It is held at the South Hadley Public Library , South Hadley, MA, and will be going on until April 29th in the Community Meeting Room (at the left of the entrance). The room is open during library hours which are:      Mondays to Wednesdays      9:30  a.m. to 8 p.m.      Thursdays & Fridays            9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.      Saturdays                                   9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  It's great to be with other artists and see the variety. Mine is a 10 by 10-inch acrylic painting called "Two Pink Pitsek" © Ella Nathanael Alkiewicz, 2022. This image is a likeness. You'll have to go see it in person to see the rich, vibrant colors. She s t r e t c h e s Canvas!

Image
Hello!   It's been soo wonderful to own my art and be able to stretch canvas. I have a variety of sizes and feel they're all wonderful. I will happily paint on every one of them.   My dear husband of nine years came to the studio after his very long day and took photos. All of these are his photos. Big thank yous, Chris Alkiewicz.  I was able to explain to him the (now) easy steps. At first I was challenged!    I prepped my space with my fish beaded necklace.  Not necessary but I say a lil prayer. Measure, measure, measure without a flannel shirt that gets in the way.  Connect the dots for a straight line. I'm rocking my Boston Red Sox lid with  Nunatsiavut kavamanga, USMCW, Red Sox and Puffin pins.  It's better to stand up and staple.  I used my cutting board too since this is a 6 by 6-inch canvas.  I sit and make sure the corners are folded tight.  Et voila! Fini!  Pijagevunga!  (Front) Now ready to drill holes to hang it. (Back)  Nakummesuak for coming and feel free
